Berlin 1945April 20, 1945. Outside his bunker, Adolf Hitler awards Iron Cross to Hitler Youth on his 56th birthday. By 1945, the Volkssturm was commonly drafting members into its ranks as young as 12 years old. During the Battle of Berlin, Hitler Youth formed a major part of the last line of German defense.
